Expert Analysis
Clarissa Richardson | Prep Gymnastics Scout
Katie Abeln’s beam routine was one to watch on repeat last season. She brings a steady confidence to the event, pairing it with long, clean lines and beautiful artistry that makes the entire routine feel effortless. Her choreography and skills flow together so naturally that even her tumbling feels like an intentional part of the choreography rather than something separate from it. There’s a polish and elegance to the way she moves across the beam that keeps you watching from beginning to end. We’re excited to see what Katie brings to the event next season and whether she can make an already standout routine even more memorable.

Abeln brings an effortless grace to her gymnastics that translates beautifully across every event. There is a natural fluidity to the way she moves, making even difficult gymnastics appear soft, controlled, and almost weightless. On beam, her tumbling and leaps seem to float across the apparatus, with each element connected by the same elegant quality that defines her overall presentation. That sense of ease is especially striking on bars, where Abeln seems to glide from one movement into the next. Her long, extended lines carry all the way through her positions and down to her toe point, creating a beautifully finished quality throughout the routine. She has a rare ability to make precision and elegance feel completely natural, giving her gymnastics a refined presence that is memorable without ever feeling forced.

Katie Abeln has all the tools of a polished all-around competitor, combining high-level difficulty with clean execution across every event. On vault, she competes a powerful Yurchenko full that rises high off the table before finishing with a controlled landing. Bars is a standout event, featuring a blind change to piked Jaeger to bail connection and a full-out dismount. Her piked Jaeger shows exceptional height and flight, while her steady swing and effortless rhythm allow the routine to flow seamlessly from skill to skill. On beam, Abeln performs with confidence and precision, attacking every element, including a back handspring to chest mount, a back handspring-layout stepout series, a front toss, impressive leap combinations, and a roundoff 1.5-twist dismount. She carries that same composure to floor, where she competes a front double full, a whip half to front full connection, and a Rudi.
Abeln is continuing to raise her scoring potential with several notable offseason upgrades. On beam, she is training a front toss to scale connection, while her vault is progressing toward a Yurchenko 1.5. On bars, she is working a full pirouette connected to a full-out dismount, adding even more difficulty to an already impressive routine. With her combination of precision, consistency, and increasingly difficult skills, Abeln is developing into an athlete with the potential to become a valuable contributor at the collegiate level.
