Seeing the success older gymnasts at her club gym had in NCAA gymnastics is what initially sparked Taylor Ingle's interest in competing at the next level. After hearing about the endless opportunities college gymnastics provided them, Ingle quickly realized there was no other path she wanted to take. She was going to become a college gymnast, and she was willing to do whatever it took to make that goal a reality.

That gritty mindset ultimately led Ingle to Southeast Missouri State University, where she competed from 2022–2026. From the moment she stepped on campus, Ingle made an immediate impact, becoming a mainstay in every lineup as a freshman and continuing to contribute throughout her collegiate career.

The Recruitment Process

At the start of her recruitment journey, Ingle felt lost and wasn't exactly sure what she was doing. She began by copy-pasting emails to different college coaches and even started a YouTube channel to share her gymnastics. Despite putting herself out there, she rarely heard back.

The lack of responses quickly became frustrating. It felt like all the work she was putting in was going unnoticed.

But Ingle continued.

“Mentally, it was draining but ended up being the most worth it thing I have ever done.”

Academics & Choosing the Right Fit

Oftentimes, academics are overlooked during the excitement of the recruiting process, but for Ingle, they were always her main priority.

“This was the first thing I looked at when choosing a school. If the school did not have a nursing program, they immediately came off of my list.”

Ingle had a clear picture of what she wanted her life to look like after gymnastics, and pursuing a career in nursing was an important part of that picture. Rather than letting that limit her options, having that priority allowed her to find a program that supported both her athletic and academic goals.

Once she found a school that checked the academic boxes, she knew she also needed to find a place where she felt at home.

For Ingle, that place was SEMO.

“From the moment I stepped on campus, I knew it felt like home. The team and coaches immediately welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like I belonged.”

Her visit to SEMO confirmed what she had been looking for. The combination of academics, athletics and the people surrounding the program made the decision feel easy.

In fact, Ingle described choosing SEMO as “the easiest decision I have ever made.”

The Realities of NCAA Gymnastics

Competing in college gymnastics was everything she had hoped it would be and more.

“It is almost indescribable. I never thought I could love gymnastics more than I loved it in high school, but it grew 100x more when I got to college.”

The transition came with its challenges, but Ingle embraced each one. College gymnastics pushed her physically and mentally while giving her some of the most rewarding experiences of her career.

“Each day was a unique challenge, but I looked forward to it. There were hard days, but it was all worth it when you get to experience the feeling of a hit routine or team win or overcoming an obstacle. My experience was one of a kind, and I would not trade it with anyone.”

For Ingle, the realities of NCAA gymnastics were about more than competing. The hard days, pressure and obstacles made the highs that much more meaningful.

Favorite Moments & The Best Parts of Being an NCAA Gymnast

Ingle's favorite moment from college gymnastics came during her senior year, when SEMO captured the conference championship. Her first three years were filled with challenges that tested the team, but those experiences made her final season even more meaningful.

The championship came down to the very last routine, and Ingle had the opportunity to compete it.

“I have never felt so nervous and excited at the same time. At that moment, I knew I wasn't just competing for myself. I was competing for every teammate who had worked so hard to get us there.”

Winning the conference championship wasn't just about the title for Ingle and her teammates. It represented the culmination of years of hard work, resilience and belief in one another, which became a memory she will cherish forever.

Beyond competing on some of the biggest stages, Ingle mentioned one of the most meaningful parts of her experience was being able to share her faith through the sport she loves. College gymnastics was about more than just routines and coming in clutch during championship moments. For Ingle, it was about faith, growth, overcoming pressure, and creating friendships that will last a lifetime.

Advice for Future Recruits

Looking back on her recruiting journey, Ingle encourages current recruits to dream big and be confident in what they bring to the table.

“Do not be scared to reach out and dream big. The worst thing they can do is not respond, and so what? You weren't supposed to go there anyway! Be YOU and know what you bring to the table. No's are inevitable, but there will eventually be a yes if it is meant to happen.”

She also encourages athletes to look beyond rankings and school names when choosing a program.

“You have to find a place where you can see yourself growing and thriving. Find somewhere that embraces your differences and highlights your best qualities.”

Above all, Ingle wants future recruits to remember that they are more than their gymnastics.

“Keep working every day and know that you are so much more than a gymnast!”
