Throughout the season, each gymnast competed against teammates and friends, striving to qualify for nationals, while hoping to catch the eye of college scouts who regularly attend. And yet, despite the individual stakes, gymnasts and regions cheered for each other. Why do the gymnasts cheer for one another? Why is there a team score category at nationals?

The camaraderie on display in each region was impossible to miss. Every gymnast was there to compete for themselves, but also for their region as a team. As an outsider watching each region, you would have thought these girls attended the same gym and had known each other before the competition. Each region hyped up, cheered, and congratulated each other after every routine with enthusiasm that was contagious. As a Kansas City Chiefs fan, I can say the gym was loud and the support palpable for each gymnast. Region-specific chants, hats, capes, crowns, and other props were used to show regional pride. The atmosphere was akin to collegiate gymnastics competitions, with all the excitement, attitude, and team support that radiated from the gymnasts.

The gymnasts were not alone in that spirit. Parents, coaches, gymnasts from other divisions, and even college scouts were cheering on the gymnasts they knew. Several gymnasts who had already committed to colleges showed up repping their school's gear, cheering loudly for their future college teammates.

Why do the gymnasts and attendees cheer for one another? Because they understand something that outsiders might not: gymnastics may be scored individually, but no one reaches this level alone. Like many competitive sports, these gymnasts have to navigate the mental load and pressure of outside life and competition. Every gymnast in that building knows the hard work, perseverance, and dedication it takes to reach this level of gymnastics. That shared experience creates a bond that transcends rivalry. And that supportive team culture carries into collegiate gymnastics, where it plays a vital role in winning competitions. In that way, the camaraderie of nationals was a great preview of what the collegiate gymnastics experience will be like, and a reminder that the sport they've poured everything into will keep giving back long after the competition ends.
