Region 5 Athlete of the Month: Cindy Mullen

Entering her sophomore year, Cindy Mullen is already showing the kind of polished, confident gymnastics that makes her one of the athletes to watch in the coming seasons. With strong routines across all four events and an impressive list of upgrades in training, Mullen has established a strong foundation while making it clear that her best gymnastics may still be ahead of her.   Mullen's floor routine immediately stands out for its combination of difficulty and presentation. She competes a double pike and a 1½ to front pike, along with a front layout–front Rudi. Her choreography is clean, creative, and expressive, allowing her personality to come through while maintaining the precision expected at a high level. She stands out for her form and presentation. She is also training a full-in, an exciting upgrade that could significantly elevate her tumbling difficulty.   On vault, Mullen competes a Yurchenko layout with an easy landing and consistently clean body position throughout the skill. The combination of control and technique gives her vault an especially polished look. She is currently training a Yurchenko full, making her vault one step closer to collegiate lineup-ready.   Mullen brings plenty of difficulty and variety to bars as well. Her routine features a blind change–piked Jaeger and a double tuck dismount. In training, she is expanding her options with a full pirouette dismount, bail to handstand, double layout dismount, and full-out dismount. She finishes with a round-off–1½ dismount. Her training work points toward even more difficulty, including an aerial–full dismount, Barani, and aerial to scale.   What makes Mullen especially exciting is how much potential remains in front of her. She is already competing routines with impressive difficulty and clean execution, yet she is only heading into her sophomore year. With upgrades such as a Yurchenko full, full-in, and more advanced bars and beam skills in the works, there is a clear path for her gymnastics to continue developing significantly over the next several seasons.   Mullen has already established herself as a confident and versatile all-around gymnast. If her current progression is any indication, her sophomore season could be the beginning of a very exciting stretch of gymnastics. College programs would be wise to keep an eye on her development in the upcoming seasons.
