Southern Utah has quietly built one of the most consistent and competitive programs outside the traditional power structure, and it starts with a recruiting philosophy rooted in mindset, development, and long-term fit. From fast-moving offers to years-long relationships, the Thunderbirds' process is anything but one-size-fits-all.

Recruiting Process: Expect the Unexpected

At Southern Utah, there's no single “typical” recruiting timeline. In some cases, relationships develop over years through camps and communication. In others, opportunities arise quickly, like a recent commitment that came together in just three days after a last-minute scholarship became available.

The constant? Staying connected.

Recruits are encouraged to maintain consistent communication, actively express interest, and attend camps to build relationships with the staff. Camps, in particular, play a major role. They offer athletes the chance to train in the program's environment, connect with coaches, and experience campus life firsthand, often accelerating the recruiting process in meaningful ways.

What Southern Utah Looks For

The evaluation process goes far beyond routines. Southern Utah prioritizes the whole athlete, focusing on character and attitude, work ethic, desire to improve, and academic performance. Success in the classroom is a major point of pride for the program, which has earned national academic recognition multiple times.

Ultimately, the goal is to build a team of athletes who are not just strong competitors, but strong people and students as well.

What Stands Out

While skills and results matter, one of the biggest evaluation points comes after things go wrong.

The staff pays close attention to:

How athletes respond to mistakes

Body language and communication with coaches/teammates

Ability to reset and perform the next routine

Differences between warm-ups and competition performance

Composure, adaptability, and resilience often reveal more than a hit routine ever could.

Southern Utah leans toward all-around athletes first, but remains flexible. Specialists are absolutely considered, especially when they fill a specific team need or they bring high-level scoring potential to an event. As with most programs, recruiting decisions depend heavily on roster balance and available scholarships.

Adjusting to the College Pace

One of the biggest transitions for incoming athletes is the pace and structure of college training. There are fewer turns and less margin for inefficiency. Athletes are expected to train with purpose, make corrections quickly, and trust their preparation. There's no extended ramp-up to routines. The expectation is to be ready, physically and mentally, to perform when called upon.

The difference-maker at Southern Utah is simple: performance under pressure. Athletes who succeed are those who can quiet the mind, trust their training, and deliver in competitive moments. It's not just about having the skills; it's about using them when it counts.

Advice and Common Recruiting Mistakes

Southern Utah's message to recruits centers on intentional training. Athletes are encouraged to:

Limit unnecessary repetitions

Focus on quality over quantity

Learn from mistakes and apply corrections quickly

Maintain routine readiness year-round

Routine consistency is non-negotiable. The program emphasizes that even small scoring differences can dramatically impact team success.

At the collegiate level, execution is everything. Athletes should still do routines during the summer. If they are looking to add a new skill, they should get that skill and insert in into the routine during the summer. Pre-season is about perfecting routines. If all the athletes in a line-up score a 9.7, then the team total is 194, which will not make it to regionals. If everyone scores a 9.8, that's a 196, and a ticket to regionals. A 9.85 score from everyone gives a team score of 197, and now it's top 16. Perfecting routines and being able to consistently perform at a high level every meet is essential.

One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is trying to present a “perfect” version of themselves. Southern Utah wants the full picture. Recruits should send complete videos, even with mistakes. It's also important to be transparent about grades and injuries and communicate openly and consistently. Honesty allows coaches to evaluate potential accurately and build trust from the start.

Who Fits at Southern Utah?

Southern Utah describes itself as a “blue-collar” program; one built on hard work, consistency, and daily improvement. The team culture emphasizes effort and accountability, growth and development, and enjoying the process. It's a program that values the journey just as much as the results.

The ideal Thunderbird gymnast is someone who is still hungry to grow. Best-fit athletes tend to be coachable, growth-oriented, motivated to improve, and strong teammates. The staff looks for athletes who aren't finished products, but are excited about what they can become.

Continuity is one of Southern Utah's biggest strengths. With a long-tenured coaching staff and stable leadership, the program has built a consistent identity and competitive standard. Despite being outside the traditional “Power Four,” Southern Utah regularly competes in the national top 15–30 range. That combination of stability and performance sets the program apart.

Closing Perspective: Keep an Open Mind

If there's one piece of advice the staff emphasizes, it's this: explore more than you think. Recruits are encouraged to stay open-minded throughout the process and consider a wide range of schools. Visit schools they may not have initially prioritized because sometimes, the right fit isn't where you expected.
